Severe drought and wildfires pose a constant threat to us here in California. These catastrophes disrupt thousands of lives and cause billions of dollars in damage each year, and they are only getting worse. That is why I was proud to help pass the Wildfire Response and Drought Resiliency Act in the House of Representatives in July. This legislation will help protect communities against wildfires, enhance drought resiliency, study ways to prevent damage to power infrastructure during wildfires using innovative technology, and ensure federal agencies and local governments have the resources needed to address wildfire and drought related issues.   

Absolutely. As the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, immigration reform is personal for me. We need immigration reform to remain competitive on a global scale, ease labor shortages, and accelerate entrepreneurship.  And despite what some say, we can be a country that welcomes immigrants and has safe, secure borders at the same time.

This year I was proud to author and introduce the U.S. Citizenship Act, which outlines a commonsense approach to immigration reform. The bill would provide a path to citizenship, ease backlogs for employer-sponsored visas, and provide resources to better manage our borders.

I am also working with my colleagues in Congress to finally deliver permanent protections for Dreamers, improve legal pathways for temporary workers, and expand work permits for the millions of immigrants who call this country home.  

Protecting the safety, security, and strength of our democracy is one of the most important issues we face today. That is why I was proud to vote for and advance the Protecting Our Democracy Act and the For the People Act in the House of Representatives.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act would take steps to protect and strengthen our democracy so that no future president – regardless of his or her political party – can act as if they are above the law and the For The People Act would overhaul money-in-politics, impliment independent redistricting commissions, and protect voters against discrimination.

Together, these bills would restore accountability and transparency in our institutions so that all Americans can again have confidence in our government’s ability to serve the people and address the challenges we face today.  

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which I was proud to help pass in the House of Representatives this year, would represent the single largest climate investment in our nation’s history by incentivizing electric vehicles and clean energy for working families and businesses, reducing carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030. To build on this foundation, I will work to reduce local pollution by supporting the deployment of clean renewable fuels for heavy duty vehicles and ensure the federal government has the authority to meet our international commitment to reduce our carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030. Meeting this commitment is critical to achieving the international cooperation needed to avert the worst scenarios of climate change.
