Mike Thompson was first elected to Congress in 1998.  Recognized as a strong representative for his constituents, Thompson has worked on solutions that create jobs, strengthen the middle class, protect our seniors and veterans, increase access to health care, and preserve our environment for future generations. Prior to serving in Congress, Thompson represented California's 2nd District in the California State Senate where he chaired the powerful Budget Committee.

Thompson is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means where he is the Chairman of the Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee as well as sits on the Health Subcommittee. Thompson is the co-founder and co-chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Wine Caucus, which consists of more than 150 U.S. Senators and House members. He is also a member and twice co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus.

Thompson was the first Vietnam veteran elected to the California State Senate. He served in combat with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant/platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He was an instructor at the Army's Airborne School.

Thompson has been recognized for his leadership on job creation, health care and veterans issues. He has received awards for his legislative efforts from the National Association of Community Health Centers, the California State Council of Vietnam Veterans, the Wine Institute, and received the prestigious Edgar Wayburn Award from the Sierra Club for outstanding service to the environment.

Thompson is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, which is composed of moderate Democrats committed to fiscally responsible solutions to America's problems. He is recognized in Congress and throughout his district as someone who has built a solid reputation for bipartisan problem solving.

Thompson is a small vineyard owner and was the maintenance supervisor for the Beringer Winery. He has taught Public Administration and State Government at San Francisco State University and California State University, Chico.

He is married to Janet Thompson, a family nurse practitioner. They have two sons, a firefighter and a deputy sheriff, and three wonderful granddaughters.

I’m excited to run for reelection in the newly drawn 4th Congressional District.  I was born in our district, I grew up in our district, and I still live in our district.  I consider it the honor of my life to represent our beautiful region in Congress.

I am running for this office because I want to make sure everyone who works hard and plays by the rules has the opportunity to get ahead and succeed.  Families here want a fair shake: well-paying jobs, affordable health care, a clean environment, quality education, and dignity in retirement. They want to know they can leave more for their children than they themselves had – that the American Dream is alive and well. My constituents want to put food on the table and fuel in the car, cover their mortgage payment, and send their kids to college or trade school without going broke.

From my first day in Congress, I’ve made these shared priorities the focus of my work. I will continue pushing for sensible, responsible policy solutions that bolster the middle class, create jobs, lower the cost of housing and health care, and strengthen Medicare and Social Security for future generations. And I will continue working to empower young people by advancing bold policies that protect our environment and invest in education.

In the current Congress, I authored the GREEN Act, the most sweeping climate policy ever to pass the House of Representatives and the flagship climate policy of President Biden’s agenda. As chairman of the Select Revenues Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, I advanced the Child Tax Credit, a tax cut for working families with children that has already significantly reduced child poverty in the months since it was first enacted. And, as Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I authored legislation to help reduce gun violence and save lives, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which passed the House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote.

The past two years have been challenging for all of us. The COVID-19 global pandemic is an unprecedented test, one that has taken hundreds of thousands of lives, has repeatedly pushed our health care system to the brink, and has disrupted our economy in every conceivable way. Congress stepped in and moved swiftly to enact policies to help save our economy and put us on a path to crush to virus.

We have a shared commitment to our great country: because we share the responsibility of building and maintaining a great nation, we share in its challenges and we share in its successes. We are in this together and I will continue to fight for our district in Congress.
